Equipment
Golf is probably one of the most complicated sports when it comes to equipment. Clubs can range in price from just a few pounds each to hundreds of pounds each, so which ones are right for you?
Well, you don't actually need any clubs to begin with as everything you will need for your lessons will be provided (we will even lend you a club with which to practice in between lessons) and the good news is that if you are new to golf then even the most expensive equipment won't make much difference to your game.
The important thing is to learn with equipment that is appropriate for your game right now, and will also be relevant to your game in the months and years ahead.
Here are a few tips for buying your first clubs.
- Avoid buying cheap package sets as they are not usually of great quality and you won't need a full set in the beginning anyway.
- Keep an eye out for a good quality second hand set, but don't buy anything that is more than 5 years old as it will be completely out of date.
- Don't buy massively reduced equipment as a deal that looks "too good to be true" usually is!
- It is always best to buy your clubs from the Pro with whom you are having lessons as he/she will know what is best for your age, gender, ability and potential.
- Be grateful for any advice you receive from friends and colleagues who are also golfers - and then ignore it! (this applies even more so when it comes to coaching!)
- You can start playing golf with just 3 or 4 clubs and a putter, with a small bag to carry them in.
- Ensure that the clubs are, at the very least, the correct length, have the right flexiblity of shaft, are the appropriate weight for your age or gender, and have the correct size grips. For more detail on this see Custom Fitting
